PLAYBOOK DEVOTIONAL
Athlete, He Knows How
Morris Michalski
2 Peter 2:9 (ESV)
… then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment …
Some athletes really know how to make big plays at crunch time. They know how to make stops and how to score under pressure. They know how to get out of a jam and how to close a game out strong. Good coaches know how to do this too.
The Bible reminds us that this is how God functions too, only on a much grander, more significant level. He knows how to do two things better than we do: rescue and judge. He can really coach. He can really play.
God faithfully rescues the godly (humble, obedient, trusting people) from trials and temptations. And He surely judges the unrighteous (people committed to living their own independent way, indifferent to Him). No one gets away with anything apart from His grace.
He doesn’t miss on a thing. No teammate of His goes unsupported and no opponent of His can shake loose and score, especially at crunch time. You gotta love a God who “plays” to win like this!
So lean on the Lord to rescue you from collapsing under the weight of a trial you’re facing just now. And rest assured that the Lord sees all and will judge rightly. Nothing escapes His attention. Hallelujah for this!
Reflect: Are you in need of rescue just now? If so, where do you need His support? Would you take a moment and ask for it?
Are you doubting God’s ability to judge others well, letting others get away with way too much? If so, let Him keep score. It’s His game to win.
A prayer to consider: LORD, I love Your know-how and I need it! I’m counting on it to play out in me and through me in this world. Rescue me when I’m tempted to give up or give in. And rest me in knowing that You will judge the world well. Fill me with Your mind on all matters by Your Spirit, for Your glory and my joy in You. In Jesus name, Amen.
