Athlete, Your Cup Overflows

Ashley Warner

Psalm 23:5-6 (ESV)

… my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, …

Trusting that God is in control is not always our first instinct, especially when we are encountering tough circumstances. For me, worry and doubt are present long before true trust that God is in control.

Most of the time our horizontal relationships with teammates, friends, family and coaches are a great reflection of how we are doing in our vertical relationship with God. When our tendency is only to see the bad in a situation or a person, you generally aren’t thinking true things about your Father in heaven.

In this Psalm, we see what is true about who He is. It tells us that God makes our cups to overflow. God’s Word does not support our negative perspectives, instead it encourages us to remember the truth about who He is and what our circumstances actually are.

Athlete, your cup overflows. God makes goodness and mercy to follow you all the days of your life. Hear Him when He tells you: “You lack nothing.”

All of these things are true if you play a terrible game. They are true when you are injured. They are true when your sports career is over. They are true in every circumstance.

Reflection: Read Psalm 23. Do you struggle with bitterness toward others or toward a circumstance in your life? Do you believe that God is good?
