Athlete, There is Peace on the Hill

Dean Thornton

Psalm 65:8 ‬ ‭(NIV)‬‬

The whole earth is filled with awe at Your wonders; where morning dawns, where evening fades, You call forth songs of joy.

Many of us have had our journeys in life filled with personal battles, and hills and valleys. Through it all, I still find time to give praise to the Lord for all that He has done for me in my life.

During difficult days, I find that the little things in life can make one appreciate all that God has done. I take joy in looking at landscapes, with sunrises and sunsets. It brings a sense of calm over me, showing me that just like those landscapes, I am part of God’s glorious creation.

I wrote a poem in college called “The Battlefield Before Us.” In it I wrote, “I find peace on that hill of battle, looking at the rising glow of the sun, a new day has begun.”

For the longest time, I felt that battlefield was inside of me, and after the end of each day I was on top of that hill, and the Lord would raise the sun again, showing me that I had made it through another day.

It’s through His creation that we can see, no matter what battles life throws at us, He is going to bring us through it.

The psalmist David talks about being in awe of God’s wondrous works, and it’s the reason why we can give praise to Him everyday. If He can make the world and its beautiful landscapes, He can help us through any problems that we may face.

We all can give praise to Him on top of our hills of battle, because He’s going to show us the sun, and that we have made it through another day.
