Athlete, Sharpen Your Tools

Tom Petersburg

2 Timothy 2:15 (NASB)

Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, handling accurately the word of truth.

When the COVID-19 disruption brought much of the world to a standstill, it was easy for people to settle into a mindset of just waiting for normal life to return. Athletes are wired for more – you know what it takes to step up in down times. (Check out the first entry this week.)

The devotionals this week have focused on steps that you can take to push your walk with God to another level despite the difficult days. People who learn to utilize the vast array of available Bible resources can plumb the depths of the Scriptures as never before. Here are some things to check out if you have not used them before.

Bibleproject.com is a website that creatively uses video to sketch out the outline of content in a book of the Bible. When you study a book in the Bible, this is a creative resource to get an overview of the book’s purpose, content and structure. You will also find videos that summarize themes and word studies in the Scriptures.

Biblestudytools.com is a large resource library. It includes concordances (find every verse that uses a particular word), Bible dictionaries (describes people, places and things in the Bible), commentaries by Bible scholars and several versions of the Bible.

gty.org provides extensive commentary by John MacArthur on all the New Testament books. This is a helpful resource for unpacking difficult portions of Scripture.

gotquestions.org offers over 5,000 answers to commonly asked Bible questions.

Living by the Book (by Howard Hendricks and William Hendricks) takes the reader through the basic steps of effective Bible study. It is packed with illustrations and exercises that will advance your ability to handle the Scriptures.

The Bible comes alive when we can understand the background of a book in the Bible, the purpose of the writer, the historical context of a book, cross references and details of people, places and things foreign to us.

These resources will take your study to a new level.
