I read two stories the other day. The first was a leaked news report about a very powerful politician who privately threatened two subordinates, saying, “I will destroy you!“ if you dare expose this information to the public. At risk of peril, they did. 

I also read a children’s book that same day to a little one. I’m really glad I did. It was entitled “Mikey and the Dragons.” The book finishes with these lines:

“Mikey realized a thing he never knew: 

If you’re afraid, there are things you can do.

Instead of hiding or running away, 

Stand up and face what makes you afraid.

Even tho afraid of something out there, 

Know how to get control of your fear.

Stand up straight, hold your head high, 

And, like the Prince, look fear right in the eye.

Don’t get controlled by feelings of dread. 

Remember most fear is in your head.

Everyone gets nervous and has a good scare, 

And feels like they are going into a Dragon’s lair.

So when you’re feeling so scared of it all, 

Just remember that dragons are small.” 

That preaches. Pretty good stuff.

Both these stories remind me of another book I read all the time. It’s the greatest Playbook ever. I call it my “Owners Manual for Life.” 

I’m always glad I do. It helps me get a hold of my fears and coaches me so well. It brings me words I need to consistently hear to properly size things up and size down my fears. 

Today’s verse is a showcase example: 

“Do not be afraid of anyone, for judgment belongs to God.”  Deuteronomy 1:17

And here’s the big takeaway … An absolute, proper fear of God casts out all other fears. 

When God is sized up, fear of man downsizes. That means that all the threats that unanticipated failure, unmet expectations, unwelcome opinions, and unfair judgments bring collapse. Fear of calamity, disease and death do too. 

What coaching! What relief!

Reflect: Do you know how to get control of your fears? What fear needs to be given the boot today because the way God wants you to see things is better?

A prayer to consider: Heavenly Father, thank You for the words of life I find in Your Book. O how I treasure them! They are life-giving and dragon-slaying. 

And thank You for the example of Jesus and the power of His Spirit at work in me. Simply amazing!

Help me size things up in my life just right, making much of You and downsizing every other fear. Make my dragons small and my joy and trust in following You great. Render me fearless and free, I pray. In Jesus name, Amen.
