Hebrews 13:6 (NIV)
So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
Ever felt the tough struggle between doing what we know is right versus what makes others happy? Sometimes the world goes our way and doing what is right does make others happy. It’s a win-win.
But, other times we have to choose between having people like us or doing what we think is best. What a crummy choice!
Why do we want people to like us? What people say, the words they use, can’t actually hurt us physically. However, meanness can strike deep in our hearts and souls and leave a lasting wound – whether it’s people saying bad things about us, friends leaving us out of different events or people treating us badly because of a decision we’ve made.
Sometimes people react when we make choices based on God’s Word. The world consists of many unbelievers who have yet to embrace the good news of the gospel.
But let me remind you, when you make a decision for God and based on God’s Word, the Lord is there to help you through any fallout. The author of Hebrews 13 writes about how we shouldn’t be afraid because the Lord is by our side.
In the second part of the verse, the writer says, “What can ‘mere’ mortals do to me?” What does the author mean by this? However much people’s words or actions might hurt us, if we are walking in the way of the Lord, they are only people. They have weaknesses and insecurities, too.
The Lord will protect you and keep you as you walk with Him, and He is full of strength and security. He will heal the situation.
If you face difficulty in life because of your walk with Christ, know He is with you and is more important than anything anyone can say or anything they can do. Choose to do what’s right.
