Athlete, Knowing this Will Get You Through
Michael Ruamthong
Philippians 4:12 (ESV)
I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need.
As athletes, we know how much injuries can hurt. Not only physically but emotionally. The emotional pain that seeps deep into our souls leads us to either lean more on God, experiencing His presence with us, or distance ourselves from Him, creating bitterness toward Him and others.
The apostle Paul had learned the secret of being content in any and every situation. He had not learned this through placing his trust on something that would fade, rather, he had anchored his hope in Christ, an imperishable treasure.
This secret is revealed by Paul to be Christ strengthening him. The surpassing worth of knowing Christ our Lord is the secret to getting through any and every situation (Philippians 3:8).
In the midst of our pain and brokenness, God is with us. We are not promised an easy life. On the contrary, we may find that our lives get increasingly more difficult.
How we are able to get through this and find contentment in it is through the strength and comfort that the Holy Spirit provides. We know that we are not alone in this, but Christ has given us His Helper to get through all things with joy.
God’s goal is to wean us off dependency on ourselves and onto Him, the Great Provider. Trust and know that the God who sustains your every breath is with you, not only in the hills but also in the valleys of life.
A prayer to consider: Lord Jesus, help me to fully put my hope and trust in You. Help me to see and desire You as my all-satisfying treasure. When trials come, may I see this as an opportunity for my faith to be strengthened and my joy to be more genuine in You.
May the surpassing worth of knowing You help me get through all things. It’s in Your name we pray and ask these things. Amen.
