Athlete, Here is How to Handle Disappointment
Mo Michalski
Habakkuk 2:1 (NLT)
I will climb up to my watchtower and stand at my guardpost. There I will wait to see what the LORD says and how He will answer my complaint.
There are things in life, things about life that bother us, that disappoint. Any of these resonate with you?
* Good not rewarded.
* Bad not punished.
* Hard work and talent unrecognized.
* Personal rejection.
* Personal failure.
* Unjustified criticism.
* Being misunderstood.
What do you do when disappointment comes your way? God’s Word offers really good guidance. Let’s take a look at four great moves from Habakkuk 2:1.
LET GOD KNOW. When disappointment comes, let God know what hurts, what bothers you. It’s not because He won’t know otherwise.
Do it because He welcomes your voice. Express your disappointment, your complaints to Him. Tell Him, “This hurts.” Don’t hold the hurt. Release it to Him.
GET A GOOD VIEW. Climb up to your watchtower. Put yourself in a place to see God, to hear from Him. Lift yourself to get a better view.
Find a way to see more than just your disappointment. Create intentional time and space in your day for Him.
WAIT. Stand at your guardpost. Wait to see something else besides your pain. Wait to see God. You will.
God meets us in our good waits. Waiting doesn’t always make disappointment disappear. Waiting on God does.
EXPECT A WISE RESPONSE. “See what the Lord says.” The LORD is great at coaching us through our disappointments.
He will have things to say. He’ll shed new light and better perspective. He will show us how to move beyond our disappointments. He will answer … and His answers will help.
Be glad, O my soul, for God’s good coaching! Habakkuk 2:1 helps rightly direct my hurts.
Reflect: How freely do you express your disappointments to God? Anything new He needs to hear about? Where do you go to see Him better?
A prayer to consider: Father, You are a Rock and a Redeemer. Thank You for entering our world and dealing with our disappointment. Your Son and your Spirit prove this.
You want my disappointments to be turned for good and my life to grow strong and move beyond them. I love You, trust You, and want You entering my pain.
And so I will climb, stand, and wait to see You in the midst again today. Help me to keep living this way and help others to do the same. For Your glory and my joy in You. Amen.
