I’ve experienced two recent bird sightings near the Bosque River that have given me reason to meditate on God.

The first sighting was miraculous. As I was walking on the river trail, I glanced skyward, noticing a large soaring bird. In complete astonishment, I said out loud to myself, “It’s a bald eagle!”

As I watched in stunned amazement, the eagle dove toward the river, snatched a fish in its talons and flew off to deliver its prey. I briefly lost sight of the eagle but spotted it moments later soaring higher and farther until it disappeared into the blue heights.

My reaction was wonder, worship and awe! I felt seen and loved by my Creator.

The second bird sighting that got my attention was a wake of buzzards. Any true Texan is familiar with buzzards, and we see them daily, scouting for their next meal or doing what this particular group was doing, cleaning up roadkill.

Why are these two experiences noteworthy? The feeding buzzards jolted me awake and jarred the memory of my recent hunting eagle encounter. And I thought to myself, “Which am I, the eagle or the buzzard?”

Am I satisfied, like those buzzards, to feast on yesterday’s leftovers? Or am I like the bald eagle, hunting what is alive today?

Am I continually pursuing, pressing in, and grabbing hold of God’s eternal Word of life-giving, meaty truth? Or am I settling for picked-over scraps?

Christian, we’ve been fundamentally redesigned with God’s Holy Spirit in us, to hunt fresh each day, early and often, seeking what God has for us today!

Hebrew 4:12 (NIV), “For the word of God is alive …”
