Athlete, Mark My Words

Mark My Words

7:1-3  “My son, keep my words, and treasure up my commandments with you; keep my commandments and live; keep my teaching as the apple of your eye; bind them on your fingers; write them on the tablet of your heart.”

Proverbs 7:1-3 (ESV)

We all love to be prophetic at times. And then pull out a line like “I told you so“ to validate our great prediction skills. I’ve done that regarding more than a few NBA and college basketball teams as well as projected rising talents.

It sure is fun to be right … and then to let others know you were. Perhaps that’s going too far.

Better to play off the principled, predictive, perfect lines God gives. Better to let Him do the talking and play off His lead. His words are delivered truly for our good. His words are powerful. And on point.

Thus, God expects us to mark His words, not just notice and respect them. This means they are to be:

KEPT: God wants His words prominently placed in our lives, not lost in the shuffle, buried in the paperwork, lost in the pile of everything else.

Always know where your Bible is. Place it out where it can be used, on top, where it can speak, where it has daily prominence.

STORED UP: The place where God’s words get stored is within. The proper storage vault for God’s Word is one’s mind and heart. Under glass or on a bookshelf is not His game plan.

Do what Denzel did in “The Book of Eli.” Memorize it. Meditate on it. Hide it in your heart (Psalm 119:11).

GUARDED: God wants His words protected so that no rival voice can gain access. Nothing must get in to steal this away. His words get top priority, with no security clearance ever given to overrule His say.

BOUND: Attach God’s words to all that you touch, every way you communicate. His words must become my words.

PERMANENTLY WRITTEN: God says to tattoo His words on our hearts. Mark them up with truth. Do the indelible work of boldly applying it there yourself.

Proverbs 7 goes on to say that when we mark His words deeply and apply them, God promises that we will LIVE -- confident, uncompromised, free. And nothing else, no one else, will be able to seduce us.

Bottom line: Better to let God do much talking and us faithfully mark His words.

Reflect: Where do you keep and store your Bible? Where and when do you read it?

How do you go about storing it up? Do you journal them, use a pen, sharpie or highlighter much? Use them in your conversations with others or self?

In what way do you guard God’s words? What good, new verse could you memorize and permanently write on your heart?

A prayer to consider: LORD, I hear You powerfully, lovingly saying to me, “Mark My words!” Thank You for leading me to truth and protecting me from my enemies.

Just like Jesus, I want to honor what You have to say and not be seduced by this world. Grant me a win like this today.

Help me to actively keep, store up, guard, bind and permanently write Your words on my heart by the power of your Spirit. I believe that doing this leads to life. In Jesus name, Amen.
