Athlete, Here is a Good Approach

Mo Michalski

Mark 10:36 (ESV)

What do you want Me to do for you?

Doesn’t it feel good when someone says, “How can I help you?” Their mindfulness and care get to you.

Already you start to feel better and open up! Anyone entrenched in performance mode, driven by ambition, or injured/sick/sidelined welcomes that question. It sure is a good approach.

When Jesus asked a similar question to a pair of brothers, He really wanted to know. He was looking for some specifics. He didn’t want a brush off, a generic answer.

He cared to know … even if they didn’t know what they were asking (Mark 10:38). They came to Him wondering, looking for help, for hope. And He engaged.

Think about it … God wanted to know … not because He didn’t know, but because He did. He simply wanted to enter in, to engage, to show us He cares and wants us to be confident in approaching Him.

He actually wants to hear from us. And He wants to do something, to help and heal, to get us thinking rightly about ourselves and others, this world and Him.

He wants to get us responding well to whatever life throws at us. He wants to bring us hope, wholeness, and abiding peace. Yes, He comes near and asks for good reasoning.

And He wants us to imitate His good approach. That means making “What’s on your mind?” a question I use with others more than a Facebook prompt to get me posting.

It means making “@BetterTogether” a universal Instagram address or Twitter handle of my heart. It means making others feel cared for like I do when I enter a Chick-fil-A store. It means making others believe I am approachable and that help is on the way.

So ask for help. Offer help. Approach like a champ. And don’t be surprised by God’s questions … or answers. He sees. He knows. He cares.

It starts with a good approach. Him to me, me to Him, and me to others.

Reflect: How confident are you in approaching God, expressing your cares and concerns? Does that valve need to open a little more? (Reading Hebrews 4:13-16 will jumpstart you.)
